In the bag: Edd Bateman’s West African Love Affair
This week at the Sunday Joint, we have a talented bassist from Devon who is beautifully recreating sounds from a colourful corner of the African continent. We asked him about a few of his tunes.
Name: Edd Bateman
Band name: Edd Bateman’s West African Love Affair
Hometown: Tavistock, Devon
First record ever bought?
I got Michael Jackson’s ‘Bad’ and ‘Dangerous’ albums on cassette for my 6th birthday and a walkman. That was the only music I owned for quite a while so they got a lot of wear.
Best floorfiller?
Teena Marie – I Need Your Lovin’
Best crate dig?

Unsure of what a crate dig might be. If I had to listen to something whilst digging I’d choose a tune with a solid beat like Pape Diouf – Casse Casse
Sleaziest record?
I’m Too Sexy For My Shirt by Right Said Fred
Most nostalgic record?
Has to be some 90’s crap I’d dance to sober at the youth club disco that I realise now has such a greater lifespan than most of the rubbish currently on the radio, and I can still remember the words.
Most valuable record?
At 13, I was a die hard Rage Against The Machine fan and spent £28 on a rare Japanaese import album called Live & Rare.
Weirdest record?
I bumped into a 10 piece band of Hare Krsna’s at a festival with no bassist in Australia recently so sat in to play their one hour long songs with them. They then took me to America to perform more with them.
Last record you bought?
I needed something funky to drive my ford mondeo estate around to with the windows down and the factory fitted stereo up at a sensible volume.
